August has so far seen bad news for horse owners (and lovers) with most national and regional papers running stories on the impending hay shortage, and the spiralling cost of caring for horses. Many of the Equestrian charities have spoken of their worry that this added expense in horses care will mean many people will be forced into giving up their horses. Equine welfare organisations say that they have already seen a 25 per cent increase in horses needing sanctuary this year, and are expecting a further rise as families struggle to cope with rising costs.
